I was watching a video about the Marxist opposition to families today, and it made me realize how insulated the whole ideology is. It's an ideology by northern europeans for northern europeans.
The hate for the nuclear family in particular betrays the truth. It isn't the norm in most of the world. Not in Africa, not in Asia, not in South America, not in a chunk of Europe. Relatively speaking, the northern european conception of the nuclear family is a relatively tiny fraction of the world.
Given that there's a lot of different family structures in the world besides the northern european nuclear family, it would be positive to look at those societies and see what actual conditions end up developing. While the nuclear family isn't perfect, it sure looks like one of the better options imo.

Trying to think long an hard about what lessons to teach my son, I've also realized that we treat hedonistic pleasure as a virtue to pursued as a good in and of itself rather than a vice that feels good on the way to more deeply satisfying pursuits, those pursuits being what I like to call "building something". Building families, communities, making safe and comfortable places to live, it's all stuff you don't put a dollar value on, but it's so much more important than dollars and cents...

It wasn't even that long ago -- 2004 to 2006 -- that I rented a two bedroom place in a nice area of town with my brother for about 300USD a month. That wasn't some crazy underground deal, that's just what rent cost at that time. Since then, rents exploded along with house prices. That's kept the numbers rising so the politicians are happy, but it's kept a generation of young men living in their parents basements.
