If you played doom on a 386 or even a low end 486 it was pretty shite, and duke 3d on a 486 was pretty bad as well. Quake on a 486 with a 487 was really bad, but it wasn't like there was anything good at the time. It wasn't until the Pentium that things started to actually run well.

The first season of Star Trek the next generation had its head up its own ass, but eventually it seems like the writers learned that they had to exercise some humility. Eventually that led to the extreme point where in DS9 the whole concept of utopia was heavily under attack.

Ideally you would never want to employ any type of violence under any circumstances, but on the other hand ideally you're also going to want to stay safe and sometimes these two ideals are going to be at odds.
