Advocate for freedom and tolerance even if you say things I do not like

Adversary of Fediblock

Accept that I'll probably say something you don't like and I'll give you the same benefit, and maybe we can find some truth about the world.

Ah... Is the Alliteration clever or stupid? Don't answer that, I sort of know the answer already...

The panopticon.

Every time I try my typical effortposting on other platforms I'm quickly reminded of why I hate other platforms.

Seeing people's posts with their unfiltered thoughts, getting positive feedback for my various effortposts, and especially getting comments from people whom are clearly engaging with the post and considering what I'm actually saying, comments that are thought provoking and sometimes end up leading to me effortposting again just because it's a really interesting train of thought, it's a really fulfilling way to communicate.

I follow and am followed with all kinds of people with all kinds of lives and all kinds of opinions, and we can't all always agree on everything. Even in disagreement, the level of discourse I get with people is fantastic. I feel like even when we disagree we're trying to learn from each other and treat each other like humans trying to understand the world in good faith instead of avatars of an ideology.

Thanks, everyone. It means a lot having a cool place to engage with people and ideas for real.

Good ssds can last a while, but they do tend to fail catastrophically. You'll want backups, preferably (to me at least) on spinning rust.

The fact that 3k/month for rent isn't in any way hyperbole in many places really saddens me. You know, I'm not *that* old, and when I was just getting on my feet you could get a 2 bedroom place for 250. Shared it with my brother. Now you might be able to get that place for 1500. And they say 2% inflation.

Yeah, this isn't really a big instance with a huge core message or anything. The important thing here is that since it's literally just parts scavenged from roadside signs hanging on a wall I couldn't in good conscience ask for donations. I'm happy to have a few cool regular users.

Also, America is like a jealous girlfriend, she expects you to send her money even if you're not around. (probably not on 2500 a year mind you) but she still wants you to file taxes and pay any applicable taxes.

They need that money to regulate food stands!

Wait, are we shilling to have people not donate to things?

Remember everyone, donate the maximum amount of 0$ to help keep the fbxl network running!

I had some tenants from India, they were telling me that restaurants there just open, people try their hand at it and either succeed or fail, not like the bureaucratic process here.

I think we don't realize just how locked down we are, but I know my grandfather died bitter having fought the fascists in the name of freedom only to see his freedoms slowly taken away, and my father tells me things were very different when he was young.

I believe the numbering of "worlds" is a relic of the cold war, the first world being developed democratic capitalist countries, the second world being communism, and the third world being anything else. Today I think it would be undeveloped or underdeveloped nations, developing nations, and developed nations.

The Chinese translation, "245,262 li under the sea"

What the hell did I just read? lmao

Ah, I didn't realize that. I was gonna say something about bleach to prevent legionnaires disease, but realized you probably know more about it than me, now I'm glad I didn't mention it. haha

I wouldn't want to worry about water, but it might not be so bad for some people to be reminded that services don't just happen.

Part of the problem of being a rich country is you have the resources to waste on bullshit.

There are many kinds of bosses in the world, it's a shame a lot of them suck.

But I think people working with a good boss would often accept working hard and will not want to leave the moment they get offered another dollar.

I went to the part of the site that has it, haha

I'd love seeing it on the big screen, but I don't want to think about the sort of people who'd probably be in the theatre with me.

Yes, one that's on season 3 right now.

I went to go see the new episode of reincarnated as a slime, and found out there's a movie too, so I'm watching that.

I love this show. It's like demon lord nice guy helps people when he can and forgives people who make mistakes.

"haaaalp! I got a phd but can't calculate that if I make minimum payments on my student loans for 600 years I will still have the same student loans I started with! I need the working class to pay my loans instead by taking out government debt that I don't intend to ever see paid down!"

You guys sure you don't want some of this here Canadian healthcare?

One big problem is that people mistake the map for the territory. They think the degree matters, but what matters is the competence the degree represents, and as the competence is erased, so is the use of a degree, and as they stop being useful it'll stop being used.

I talk a lot about 13 high schools in Baltimore failing to have a single student at grade level among graduates. If there are no students who can read, write, or do math at grade level, there should be no graduates. Fail the failing students, don't give them a diploma if they're failing to meet the standard. Simple as that.

Instead, they're graduating students from high school who can't do the work at a grade school level. At that point, why even care about a high school diploma? Just give them a high school diploma in grade 3 and be done with it.

Of course, it's a cargo cult. "Successful people have diplomas and degrees so if we have diplomas and degrees we'll be successful" -- in the past that was true, but in the past those people could read and write and do math. Just like building a radar dish out of bamboo and grass is a waste of time, so is a high school diploma for someone who is functionally illiterate.
