They hate the fan base. The fan base is a basket of deplorable to these people.
So they take the thing, and they try and twist it, and shape it into something they align with. And if they kill it in the process, that's OK, because they hated it to start with. It was full of people sharing anecdotes about what a nice guy he was to them when they met him in real life.
