What's a good free speech domain registrar?

#AskFedi #DNS

Also, how free speech friendly is the .family TLD?

Wait. What is a registrar even for? Why can't you just rent a domain direct from registries/TLDs?

@feld That sounds like it would be preferable then, because there would be less people with power over your domains.

@feld But why does this system even exist in the first place?

@pwm @icedquinn That's not an ideal situation. People should be honest about their views. Partly because it means assholes can be effectively avoided; partly because open debate is good.

@feld Do registrars have power over domains they sell? I don't see why they would have to. It should just be all up to you and the registry at that point.

@feld I guess it doesn't matter then.

@feld And this question matters more.

What's the most free speech friendly TLD? .st? .us?

@Economic_Hitman @jeffcliff I looked into that.

In our Terms of Service, we have this provision:

“1984 ehf. reserves the full and unconditional right to decide whether to terminate services to the Subscriber, with or without notice, if 1984 ehf. considers the materials stored by the Subscriber to be illegal, unethical or harmful.” > > - The 1984 team

In house we refer to this as the Nazi provision, because even if we are a freedom of speech host, we will not have the fruits of our labor used to spread racism, anti Semitism, instigation of violence or hatred. We have taken down multiple Nazi sites, Jihad sites, sites encouraging violence, terrorist sites and sites endorsing anti Semitism.

Good on them for taking down the sites endorsing violence, but I wonder what they define as racism and anti-Semitism 🤔
