I've never been, but the population densities make me wonder if it's really .. compressed. I remember going to this Reddit meetup in Singapore (and on my way there I ran into a gay rights rally .. which was apparently not illegal) .. and at both the rally and the meetup, all the young folks all just seemed like they wanted out. So many of them wanted to leave, like a kid who grows up in a small town.

I learned about the term "Hell Joseon" a few years ago, which is a phrase that popped up around 2015.

The problem isn't necessarily the actual income inequality. South Korea ranks reasonably well in terms of GINI coefficient. The problem is the intensely competitive culture which means people work their asses off when they're young, and then more in high school, and then more in college, then when they get into the workplace they keep working hard. Essentially, they're doing fairly well, but it's at the cost of their whole lives. South Koreans have one of the lowest fertility rates on earth, and for every 100 Koreans alive today there will be 4 great grandchildren if things stay the way things are.

I think if anything it shows that materialism is false -- they work so hard for what is in historical terms a very decent life, but they have nothing left for anything else. No family, no community, no religion, just work and the material conditions that work provides. And it's leading to their extinction.

It is interesting how materialism is the result of:

* The state
* Egalitarianism
* Population growth
* Markets

Combine those and you get a disaster.

Modern lifestyles make people existentially nervous and uncertain. It's a kind of invisible living hell. Same is happening in Japan and the West.

Humans need a certain level of conflict to orient their energies, to feel their lives have meaning. Too much lack of conflict and they will just start to make up new fictional conflicts in order to feel they are fighting for somathing.

Not necessarily conflict, but a challenge. Something to work for and aspire to. A physical manifestation of hope.

It's why people literally climb mountains.

The problem is when you live in a challengeless society where almost everything can be achieved with a few clicks herw and there.

We in the West should never feel sorry for ourselves - claiming we have no meaningful challenges. There are always opportunities for us to make positive contributions to the world. I regard these discussions as minor positive contributions.

My point was about people making up inexistent issues or blowing minor issues out of proportion in nations were almost all basic and secondary needs are reasonably covered ( food, shelter, security, occupation, health, etc). Mostly making the hypothesis does fictional issues stem from boredom and lack of purpose more than from actual sysyemic issues.

Part of the problem in the West is that the managerial class has us so thoroughly trained that we only look to them for meaningful challenges.

In reality, we are at a pivotal moment in the future of mankind: there is an inevitable global Mass depopulation event imminent, and those who take up the challenge are building the future of humanity right now: the managerial class is killing off all of its followers, and who will be left on this planet? Those who picked up that mantle, rejected the incentives of the managerial elites, and chose to have and raise children so they can go on to be successful in the empty World ahead of us.

Of course no one's going to tell you about that, they want you to die out.

People can't afford rent, they can't afford food, they can't afford transportation, but the Democrats only seem to think all women care about is killing babies.

Edit: this was supposed to be a reply to another post. Not sure how it ended up here.

Symbolic issues are a threat to politics.

That being said, I am very happy with the #10A compromise to kick the abortion question back to the states.

In way it's a very Social Darwinist form of dealing with the issue.
States who push for the destruction of nuclear famility and promotion of hedonism will see themselves depopulated while states who promote forming families and responsible sex practices will see themselves increasing their population and voting power ( if also the government clamps down on immigration).
