I threw a power meter onto my empire of dirt tonight. I was wondering how much power all these sites burn.

80W at startup, 37W while running.

Slightly less than a kind of sad incandescent light bulb. About 40 dollars per year.

@sj_zero
That's pretty darn good. I'm struggling with how to keep it up longer term under power loss situations. The area around here has been under such massive development that our power grid is suffering horribly for it.

@sj_zero My dual CPUs are 50W idle each and then there's the rest of the hardware.

@Suiseiseki @sj_zero that's like a standard incandescent lightbulb

@Mamako @RedTechEngineer @sj_zero Coal - you need to keep shoveling kilo-tonnes of coal into the furnace.

Meanwhile you need only a few kg of fuel for nuclear power.

Unfortunately, current enrichment and power generation methods are absolutely proprietary, but if anyone wants to donate me a few hundred kilograms of natural uranium, I'll gladly setup GNU/Centrifuges and GNUclear reactor with 100% free software in the back yard.

@Suiseiseki @sj_zero @Mamako you'll have to ask the Canadians. They are way more lax with private use of radiological materials than the land of the free and europe.

Just don't walk in nature or defy the government when it's doing something stupid and you're aces.
