New Hampshire now requires police to wear body cameras for accountability.
@redditmirrorbot It's sort of ironic, body cameras tend to prove that most cops actually try really hard to do a good job and do right by people. Accountability works both ways, so I think that's a good thing. Earn respect, earn disrespect. Your choice.

I found this video by Viva Frei very thought provoking.
I really enjoyed the Air Farce and This Hour has 22 minutes when I was a kid, and Rick Mercer was on the latter show. He had his segment called "Rick Rants" where he'd talk about whatever is going on at the moment. Later, he got his own show where he had a similar bit, and after the entire show finished after many years he released a book where he compiled his rants.
One of the rants was about how mean people were on the Internet, and how we need to put names next to people who are on the Internet. Personally, I'm a product of the Internet and I know that's a ridiculously stupid idea that will only result in the cancel culture we see today if you're lucky and that's all that happens. On the other hand, if you look at it from the point of view of this video, maybe they had this idea that if you saw the person has a real name instead of pussymangler69 you'd realize they're a person with a name too and maybe you'd treat them a little better. I think people who push vegetarianism do the same, they try to name cattle to humanize them.
I still think a lot of the people who pushed that agenda weren't naïve. Google and Facebook know exactly what they're doing, and they want that data point damn the consequences. But there's people out there who I can disagree with and respect them even though I think they're wrong.

@realcaseyrollins I used to enjoy reddit, but got chased off for not embracing the groupthink enough. I'm sure there's some cool communities, but I don't know which ones are still cool and interesting. One thing I think you'd need to be careful of is to maybe limit it to the top few posts every so often or you'll have the yellowandblack.xyz problem of drowning a small number of users in posts, which I think would limit engagement.
I think we need some communities that are separate from the politics of the day. There are lots of things we used to talk. Humor. Pictures. Gaming. Programming. News.
I think those would be a good start. The fast paced twitteresque stream of consciousness is one way to experience content, but I think the slower link aggregator with threaded conversations is a different way, and you can spend more time engaging with the content and also with other people, which I think could lead to different sorts of engagement.

@derek He must pay like shit if he can get all those full time employees for only 7500/day.

>it would have been so inefficient masks would have still been needed
You mean like exactly what's happened in my jurisdiction?
High vaccination rate, masks never went away, no talk whatsoever of reopening. Welcome to a hell of our own creation.

@wjmaggos @polarisera @realcaseyrollins Come on now, you think you're still masking because others didn't?
82% of eligible people have had at least one does and 71% have had two doses in my jurisdiction, and they aren't even talking about ending anything any time soon.
Open your eyes, man. The only reason anyone cares about COVID is there's power to be had.

@djsumdog @hogihung @millenial_mom I'm really questioning the medical ethics of some of these folks. Realistically, you can't even ethically test a vaccine like this on pregnant women, but somehow we have all kinds of doctors telling women to just take it.
For all we know, we're going to have a generation of thalidomide babies, and the doctors will have nobody but themselves to blame.

@redditmirrorbot Seems to me like this is exactly what is supposed to happen -- This guy didn't own the land, he used it and got 27 years of use out of it rent-free, and eventually the rightful owner of the land came around and told him to get out.
Sometimes bad things happen. It isn't the state's fault that this guy didn't own the land he was living on, he's the one who decided to live on land he didn't own.

There's a lot less to it than lemmy as far as I can tell, it's just a basic activitypub federated link aggregator. You can host communities and people on other instances can subscribe to your instances. One really nice thing is you can also subscribe to communities using ActivityPub compatible clients like Mastodon, Pleroma, or Soapbox. Definitely in its early days, but I like it.
I have an instance set up at https://lotide.fbxl.net so you can see what it looks like.
I've got custom CSS on my instance, but it's straight html and css to the extent that if you can get past the https, you can open a lotide site on ncsa mosaic, and it just gracefully degrades all the stuff that browser can't do. Not a lot of modern software that does that.
I wrote a guide explaining exactly how I set it up from a fresh ubuntu install here: https://lotide.fbxl.net/posts/3

@11112011 I'd be doing everything in my power to not have to be the guy known as the next Paul Volcker. He might have ended the stagflation, but he was hated by everyone but policy wonks for what he had to do in order to do it.
@alex Reddit: Not even once.
I'm partial to lotide, personally. I'd like to see more folks using that federated link aggregator since it's easy to self-host

@matrix the only way I'd agree with what the person is bitching about it a the fact that copyright terms need to be reduced dramatically. It's been 70 years since the Lord of the Rings was published, and some megacorp will keep profiting from it for another 70 because of a government enforced monopoly. I think we are going to soon see similar problems with music and movies (and eventually video games) because high fidelity audio and video have been around so long that any given artist is going up against the greatest hits of the century at all times.
I figure 15 year copyright terms with a one time 15 year extension you have to apply for is more than enough. Beyond that you're not giving people an incentive to create, you're giving them an incentive to hoard other people's ideas.

@saxnot I've never seen a screen die unless someone broke it. I've seen batteries die but also generally replacing a battery is relatively simple and the battery dying is a function of age, not really what you do with it. If you don't need to use a mechanical port to charge and you have another port for headphones then you're going to be using that port very little and it'll last quite a while which can be important especially if it's on the mainboard and you don't really have a way to replace it.
@saxnot Nothing wrong with USB-C as long as you don't rely on it as the only port on your phone. USB-C + Qi Charging + 3.5mm headphone jack and you've got yourself something that will work great in the long run. If literally all you have is USB-C and you're relying on it for charging and for headphones, I suspect your USB port will be the first thing to die on your phone.
I think it's important to think long-term now that phones are basically fine and most phone plans don't come with a free replacement phone every couple years so there's much less incentive to buy a new one since the new one will be just as fine as your old one and you'll be paying for your new one.

@WoodshopHandman @turncoattradition They aren't burning down *my* city. Seems to me they're burning down *their* cities.
@Stridermcperson I thought that maybe it was because they reopened their borders.
