Advocate for freedom and tolerance even if you say things I do not like

Adversary of Fediblock

Accept that I'll probably say something you don't like and I'll give you the same benefit, and maybe we can find some truth about the world.

Ah... Is the Alliteration clever or stupid? Don't answer that, I sort of know the answer already...

Surprisingly, while I agree that energy isn't infinite and we need to be smart about the future, energy use does have the potential to go down. Per capita energy use peaked in the 1970s and has been either going sideways or slowly dropping since, and the energy required for a unit of economic input has also been dropping. This all makes sense since we're constantly finding more efficient ways to use energy.

The slow march of efficiency reminds me of the story of the 4 minute mile: It was believed forever that human beings simply were not capable of running a mile in 4 minutes. Over time, however, training methods improved, material science improved, dietary science improved, and today a 4 minute mile isn't the height of human achievement, it's achievable by relatively normal athletes.

It seems to me that the state keeps trying to do the equivalent of loading a runner up with cocaine thinking that they just need to give a bit more cocaine and they'll hit that mark when continuous improvements adding up over time will be more effective.
energy per capita and energy per real dollar of gdp from 1950 to present

rss feed support in friendica is still one of the top tier features of that platform.

Thousand yard stare dog

Even though it doesn't fully support every feature, Matrix Conduit is so lightweight I can't justify using even Matrix Dendrite, so I'd recommend people look at it at least as an option. Just keep the new signups off and create new users individually or you'll end up a nest of bots.

Many IRC rooms on liberachat are mirrored on Matrix which is really nice. I used to love IRC, but I don't have just one base of operations anymore where I can have an IRC client sitting open, so having element running on a few devices and I can interact when I have a few minutes is really nice.

"can we use these to monitor everyone?"

Isn't reason a libertarian rag?

Maybe the governments around the world should fuck off and let nature take it's course. Yeah, GDP shrinks and so on and so forth when birth rates fall, but there's also big benefits to having fewer people -- and arguably benefits that end up self-correcting the problem such as increased liberty and value for individuals.

No wonder the state fears a falling population, they've been stealing from us for 100 years and at this rate we might actually be in charge of our homes again.

The same corpos using nostalgia to try to sell the past back to us are the ones who destroyed the things that used to be good in the first place. If they were capable of not breaking it then they would have.

MS can't even make a setting app that lets you set an IP address. All is lost.

Godspeed, internet of yore

Ah, I remember seeing something like that because I generally prefer dark mode (and I like my dark modes black)

The css on there respects your browsers light/dark mode settings (which it can inherit from the os)

It's an impressive thing that the web has a feature like that, imo.

Nnnooooooooooo

(Light mode? Harsh!)

I've got a solution on my instance: I only discuss moderation decisions with the voices in my head that tell me to burn things!

"Should I delete this post and ban the poster?" "But it burn it all burnitall" "thanks for your input!"

There are lots of broken things in Canada, but I'm not aware of this specific broken thing.

10 more pages and I'll be done reading Beowulf.

From now on I check to make sure the books I read are in english. That was a slog.

The sad thing is that 2023 Lisa would say this and completely ignore how it applies to "her side"

Rip the Simpsons

They can stay in the pigsty they've built since they can't keep their grubby fingers to themselves.

Maybe if some of these governments want to start obeying the law we can talk.

They have a few choices. Twitter is still one, and Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok...

Sadly, the Internet of my youth is likely coming to an end. Politicians around the world refuse to allow people to have discussions they can't stick their fingers into.
