@kravietz @DaveyDelimbo my understanding is that it's a smart move. You get more heating or cooling energy than you put in because you're borrowing effort from the earth.
@DaveyDelimbo @kravietz the biggest energy consumers in a home aren't computers or iPhones, it's HVAC and appliances. Heating in winter on the coldest days and cooling in summer on the hottest days, and refrigeration for food. Most gadgets put together don't count for 1% of a homes power consumption.

I'm not sure you can say that. Steam isn't a monopoly (there are definitely credible competitors in the PC app store space including epic and gog) and they take 30% as well.
Moreover, there are other stores on android -- Samsung has their own independent store on every samsung phone, amazon has an app store that runs on android, and I think there's android phones that don't even install google apps by default including the play store.

@kravietz Unfortunately, the reality that industrial scale energy generation is always going to have some negative effect on the planet isn't understood by most people, so it's relatively easy to manipulate them into hating sustainable energy sources with less impact over decades and centuries. Hydroelectric is my favorite example of this, where it's been producing power for over 100 years in some areas but it's been so demonized nobody wants to touch it.

Back in the day I programmed a ModeX RPG engine in qbasic that honestly is a little insane for what it is. pixel*pixel scrolling, shadows, limited transparency, double buffering, scripting... Sure there were much more impressive games out at the time, but for a crappy little jrpg engine written by a high school student in qbasic, it had no business being what it turned out to be.
Optimizing the renderer to display the entire background (and I think the sprites) in 4 passes, once for each bitplane, and virtually eliminating multiplication, division, and modulus operations was sort of punching above my weight at the time.
Video is just about ModeX, I think it's an interesting curiosity of the era.
